Management Considerations in Holstein Heifer Development
The purpose of the heifer herd is to provide replacements for cows leaving the herd and to improve genetic progress. First-lactation cows significantly contribute to herd production and profit. A recommended goal for dairy replacement heifers is to calve at 24 months of age with a targeted postcalving body weight of 1250 pounds. A common misconception is that this goal is either unattainable or...
متن کاملRhabdomyosarcoma with posterior paresis and megaesophagus in a Holstein heifer.
A 7-month-old Holstein heifer presented with posterior paresis and megaesophagus. At post mortem examination, a nodular tumor was found attached to the thoracic wall and the eighth to eleventh thoracic vertebrae, adjacent to the left posterior pulmonary lobe. The tumor was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma by histology. This is a very rare case of spinal infiltration of rhabdomyosarcoma in cattle.
متن کاملCharacterization of Holstein heifer fertility in the United States.
The overall object of this research was to characterize US Holstein (virgin) heifer fertility. This included investigation of factors influencing heifer fertility and estimation of heritability, as well as correlations with cow fertility and first-lactation milk yield. A secondary objective was to compare linear and logistic model estimates of fixed effects and linear and threshold model estima...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of calf and heifer losses in Danish Holstein.
Mortality in dairy cattle is not only relevant with regard to economic losses but also to animal health and welfare. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to explore the genetic background of postnatal mortality in calves and replacement heifers in different age groups until first calving in Danish Holsteins. Records of Danish Holstein heifer calves born in the years 1998 to 2007 were extract...
متن کاملA diploid-triploid (60,XX/90,XXY) intersex in a Holstein heifer.
The diploid/triploid (60,XX/90,XXY) condition in Bos taurus is very rare and only three cases have been published previously. The present animal exhibited an aplastic vulva, penis and clitoris agenesis, a male-like urethra located in a pseudoprepuce opening between the mammary complexes and a well developed M. rectipeninus. A normal (60,XX) female karyotype was detected in lymphocyte cultures w...
